Punjab, Haryana sizzle under heat wave

By IANS

Chandigarh : Severe heat wave engulfed Punjab and Haryana Sunday with Hissar town in Haryana sizzling at 45.2 degrees Celsius and the weatherman forecasting no let up in the next 3-4 days.

People largely remained indoors in most cities and towns of Punjab and neighbouring Haryana as temperatures mostly remained above 43 degrees in these places.

Chandigarh – the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana – had the hottest day of this season at 43.4 degrees.

"Even the AC was not able to make the room cool. It was only giving a comfort level. I had to call a mechanic to see if something was wrong. He told me that the heat wave was not letting enough cooling to happen," said city-based property consultant Rajiv Saini.

Met officials here said that the current heat wave was due to dry winds blowing from the north-westerly direction and the spell would continue for the next 3-4 days.

Though the temperature in Hissar Sunday was the highest in the region, it was, however, 0.4 degrees less than Saturday.

Karnal and Ambala in Haryana recorded a maximum of 43.5 and 42.7 degrees respectively.

In Punjab, Patiala was the hottest at 43.7 degrees followed by Ludhiana at 43.5 and Sikh holy city Amritsar at 43.
