Retired IAS and former Vice-chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University Mahmoodur Rahman passed away in late night of July 8. He was 75 years old.
Mahmoodur Rahman suffered a stroke on July 6, and was in ICU since then. He suffered stroke while he was attending a marriage ceremony in Lucknow.
Mahmoodur Rahman served vice-chancellor post of Aligarh Muslim University from 1995 to 2000. He also served as Chairman of Bombay Mercantile Cooperative Bank.
Due to his popularity among students and faculty, many people at AMU demanded for his second term.
Born in Fatehpur of Uttar Pradesh, Rahman got selected for Uttar Pradesh public service commision in 1966, but next year he got selected for the national civil services.
During his tenure as an IAS officer, he served as Assistant Commissioner in Anantnag of Jammu and Kashmir, sub divisional magistrate in Sopore of Jammu and Kashmir, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Jammu and Kashmir, Deputy Commissioner at Udhampur, and Deputy Commissioner and Development Commissioner in Ladakh and many other posts.
After retiring from AMU as VC, he served Government of India as Secretary to Parliamentary affairs ministry. He was awarded Padma Shri in 1991.
Later on, he headed Mahmoodur Rahman Commission constituted by Maharashtra Chief Minister late Vilasrao Deshmukh in 2008. The commission’s report, which came out in 2013, made some strong points and suggestions over social stature of Muslims in Maharashtra.
