Social activist Teesta Setalvad was detained by the Police in Varanasi today soon after she landed in Varanasi. She was coming to Varanasi to speak up in an event organised at Rajghat, an issue which is totally different than the one in Banaras Hindu University.
When Setalvad landed on Varanasi airport, security personnel escorted her to the Police line area, where she has since been detained.
When contacted about this, administrative officials suspected “possible disruption” due to Teesta’s presence.
Setalvad’s visit to Varanasi was scheduled almost a month back when the dates were announced for an event at Samajwadi Jan Parishad at Rajghat. Police suspected that Teesta’s presence in Varanasi may fuel the already tense situation in Varanasi which happened after girls protest at Banaras Hindu University.
However, the organisers of the event and the people with Setalvad showed every evidence to the administration for the legitimacy of their claim. But the administration paid no heed to this request and kept Setalvad detained.
Official sources informed that Teesta Setalvad might be in detention until the late evening when police will find the “good time” to release her.
