Kannur (Kerala) : The police seized swords and country-made bombs and took 10 people into custody Monday in raids in Thalassery town following the murder of a Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) activist Sunday.
The weapons were seized at Chalad near Thalassery, one of the major towns in Kannur district in north Kerala.
The district witnessed several violent incidents Monday with CPI-M and the BJP-RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) combine ransacking and destroying one another’s offices and properties.
The CPI-M activist was hacked to death near Thalassery and the Left party blamed RSS and BJP for the murder.
“Police are keeping heightened vigil and the situation is under control,” Inspector General of Police (northern range) A. Hemachandran said.
At a peace meeting convened by the district administration Monday, the political parties agreed not to organize any public meeting in Thalassery and surrounding areas for a week.
Kannur district has witnessed several murders in the last three decades due to intense political rivalry between CPI-M and the RSS-BJP combine.
