CRPF trooper kills himself in Kashmir camp

Srinagar : A trooper shot himself dead with his service rifle inside a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) camp in Jammu and Kashmir.

Police said A. Srikumar from Kerala killed himself at the CRPF camp in Tral, 45 km from here in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district, late Tuesday. He had just returned after a two-month leave.

“He shot himself in the head using his service rifle and died on the spot,” a CRPF spokesperson told IANS.

Scores of army and paramilitary troopers have committed suicide or shot their officers in Jammu and Kashmir, prompting the top brass to find ways to tackle stress amongst security forces doing counter insurgency duties in hostile conditions.

Counsellors have been engaged and troopers are now given frequent leave to join their families. More recreational avenues are also being created.
