Transfer technology to fight climate change, China tells the rich

By Xinhua

Seoul : China said Tuesday that increasing the flow of technology transfers from the developed to the developing world will be key to fighting climate change.

Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, speaking at the Asia Cooperation Dialogue's sixth ministerial meeting in Seoul, said the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Kyoto Protocol have already established the "basic principles" for the global response to climate change.

Developed countries, he said, should continue to take the lead in cutting greenhouse gas emissions after 2012 and increase technology transfer to developing countries.

Yang said the contribution of developing countries in tackling climate change, "for a considerably long period of time to come," will be mainly in the area of mapping and carrying out strategies for sustainable development and participating in international cooperation.

The Chinese minister's remarks come on the eve of the Group of Eight (G8) summit in Germany, where climate change tops the agenda.
