The bodies of two men and a 12-year-old girl have been recovered in the Gulab Bagh village, the Times of India said. Another 25 people were buried alive in an avalanche that hit houses in lower Munda, near the Srinagar-Jammu valley.

At least 32 villagers have been rescued so far. Army and police have launched a massive operation as fears grow that more people could be trapped under snow following one of the country’s biggest-ever recorded avalanches.

In 2005 an avalanche in region claimed the lives of some 200 people.
