After making its mark in Karnataka in May 2023, India’s grand old party INC (Indian National Congress) has now won the Telangana Assembly Elections held on 30th November 2023, the results of which have been declared yesterday, 3rd December. With this win, the INC has gained power in two southern states of India.
A Clear Lead for Congress
The INC has bagged 64 seats of the total 119 seats thus making a sweeping victory compared to its performance in the previous elections when they had got just 19 seats.
The former ruling party Bhart Rashtra Samithi (BRS, formerly known as TRS) that was confident of winning for the third time managed to get 39 seats. While in 2018 it had emerged as the sole winner with 88 seats in its kitty.
The BJP bagged 8 seats but did much better than the previous elections in 2018 wherein they had won in just one constituency. This time the vote share of the party has clearly increased making them victorious in 8 constituencies.
The AIMIM (All India Majlis Itehadul Muslimeen) that has been continuously retaining the 7 constituencies from 2009 has retained the seats in this election too but have lost much of their clout managing a win with a narrow margin in Yakutpura and Nampally .
Less Voter turnout
The state recorded 71.34% voter turn after the polling time was extended in some booths till 9.30 pm. There has been a slight decrease in the voter turnout as compared to 2018 assembly elections where the percentage was 73.74.
This time about 0.74 percentage of voters opted for NOTA (None of the Above). Many constituencies recorded less than 50% of voter turnout.
There were 2290 candidates contesting the elections this time with 221 women and one transgender.
KCR resigns
Chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao submitted his resignation disappointed over the failure of his party BRS to win a hattrick. The KCR-led Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) had formed the maiden government of the newly formed state Telangana in 2014 and emerged victorious in 2018 as well.
His son KTR the working president of the party posted on, “grateful to the people of Telangana for giving BRS party two consecutive terms of Government. Not saddened over the result today, but surely disappointed as it was not in expected lines for us. But we will take this in our stride as a learning and will bounce back. Congratulations to Congress party on winning the mandate. Wishing you Good Luck!”
Congress to form Government
Revanth Reddy president of the Telangana Congress and other delegates met the governor Tamilisai Soundararajan staking claim to form the government in Telangana State.
Dedicating the party’s success in the assembly election to ‘Telangana martyrs’, Reddy said his party will deliver all the promises made by them.
Some of their promises include cash transfers, pension schemes, free electricity, cylinders and land to a wide base of voters to the people of the state.
Rahul Gandhi, in a post in Hindi on X, said, “We humbly accept the mandate of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan — the battle of ideology will continue.”
“I am very thankful to the people of Telangana – we will definitely fulfil the promise of making ‘Prajalu Telangana’. Heartfelt thanks to all the workers for their hard work and support,” the former Congress chief said.
