Gaza : A former spokesman for Gaza Hamas leader Ismail Haneya on Saturday voiced support to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ call for a mutual ceasefire.
“I think the Palestinian parties must carefully evaluate and study the situation in Gaza Strip in a way to promote the national interest of the people,” Ghazi Hamad, spokesman for the former Hamas government, told reporters in Gaza.
“The calmness is not a shameful thing for the Palestinian people… Instead, it reflects strength, wisdom and a well position,” Hamad added. He said protecting the Palestinian people was necessary since the international community stands still before the Israeli offensive.
On Thursday, Abbas called for a ceasefire that dominates in West Bank and the Hamas-run Gaza Strip as well.
In another development, Hamad disclosed that Egypt’s Intelligence Chief Omar Suleiman’s visit to Israel came as a result of a visit by a Hamas delegation to Cairo.
A Hamas delegation earlier this month held discussions in Cairo with Egypt on reopening the Rafah crossing point after more than half year of closure.
