Tamil Nadu Police on alert after narcotics seizure

Chennai : The Tamil Nadu Police have been put on high alert following several narcotics seizures, the latest being that of poppy seeds worth over Rs.30 million at the Chennai Port.

A total of 1,060 bags of poppy seeds were seized from five containers Saturday. They had been camouflaged as pulses, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) said here late Saturday.

The poppy was sent from Karachi and came to Chennai via Colombo, according to P. Babu, the additional director general of DRI.

Chennai Police Commissioner C.K. Gandhi Rajan has asked officials to be “extra alert about the movement of narcotics” through Chennai and Tamil Nadu.

On Thursday, Coimbatore airport authorities recalled a Silk Airlines flight that had taken off and arrested a passenger travelling to Kuala Lumpur. Twenty-seven kg of ketamine was recovered from him.

Police said the passenger, Feroze Ahmed, had been a courier since 2005. The 27-year-old has admitted to carrying narcotics substancesoin the Chennai-Coimbatore-Singapore circuit several times.

Chennai airport authorities Wednesday arrested a man, Shahul Hameed Nizamudeen, with five kg of drugs.
