14 killed in Maoist attack in Eastern India

New Delhi : At least 14 people have been killed in Maoist attack on police establishments in the Eastern Indian state of Orissa following which a massive counter-insurgency operation was launched Saturday.

Thirteen citizens and one civilain were killed in simultaneous attacks by 500 Maoists at five government establishments in Orissas Nayagarh district that lasted for several hours late last night, the news agency Indo Asian News Service reported today.

Nearly 600 policemen are taking part in the operation to arrest the Maoists, the news agency said, quoting a senior police official of Orissa.

Four people were injured in the Maoist attacks and two of them are in a critical condition.

Orissa Chief Minister visited the affected areas today and announced compensation for the slain policemen.

Security has been tightened across Orissa and the state police put on high alert, the news agency said.
