Kuwait to restart issuing work visas to Indians

Kozhikode (Kerala): The Kuwaiti missions in India will restart issuing work visa from next week, Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi said here Saturday.

The Kuwaiti embassy in New Delhi and consulate in Mumbai had stopped issuing work visa for Indians in December 2007 following a dispute with India over labour contract rules.

“We have come to an understanding with the Kuwaiti authorities over the labour contract issue. They will start issuing the work visa from Monday or Tuesday next week,” Ravi told a press conference here.

The impasse began as the Indian authorities proposed new employment conditions for its nationals working in Kuwait.

On the issue of minimum wage for Indians working in the Gulf region, the minister said that the government is holding talks with various countries.

“In Bahrain, we have put forward a proposal regarding minimum wages for Indian workers. We will hold discussion on the issue with the authorities there next week,” he added.
