Markets head south despite Reliance Power bonus offer

Mumbai : The Indian equities market declined marginally Monday in choppy trades despite starting the day on a positive note on back of an announcement of bonus share offer by Reliance Power Ltd.

The 30-share sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) opened at 18,228.21 points and notched a high of 18,256.82. It lost 67.08 points at the day’s close to 18,048.17, down 0.37 percent.

The broader 50-share S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) opened at 5,304.45 points and closed at 5,276.90, down 24 points or 0.49 percent, after touching a high of 5,348.60 points.

The BSE Midcap index, which closed at 7,651.64 points, went up 49.40 points or 0.65 percent.

The BSE Smallcap index, which closed at 9,768.86 points, went up 134.22 points or 1.40 percent.

On BSE, 1,847 shares advanced, 875 declined and 50 remained unchanged.

The top gainers of the day included Mahindra and Mahindra at Rs.640, up 3.48 percent, ITC at Rs.210, up 3.45 percent and Hindalco at Rs.184, up 3.08 percent.

The top losers included Satyam at Rs.427, down 2.56 percent, Tata Motors at Rs.733, down 2.41 percent, DLF at Rs.858, down 2.38 percent and State Bank of India at Rs.2,250, down 2.09 percent..
