Brussels: The European Union has stressed that declaration of independence by Kosovo is a unique case and cannot be applied to other areas in the world.
“Kosovo is a sue generis case. It is a unique case,” EU Commissioner for external relations Benita Ferrero-Waldner told reporters in Brussels Monday.
She explained that there was an UN resolution 1244 for a long time which provided a basis to determine Kosovo’s future status.
“Kosovo is not a blueprint that can be applied to any other area,” stressed the Commissioner.
Russia and Serbia which have rejected the declaration of independence by Kosovo say it could set a dangerous precedent and encourage separatist movements in other pats of the world.
The breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia in Georgia are planning to ask Russia and the U.N. to recognize their independence following the independence declaration by Kosovo on Sunday.
Meanwhile, EU Foreign Ministers are discussing here today a common European position on Kosovo.
