Senate bodies elect new chairmen; vow to develop IT, uphold freedom of expression

Islamabad : Senator Liaquat Ali Bangulzai was unanimously elected as chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Information and Broadcasting while Senator Abdul Raziq was elected Chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology.

The Senate standing committees on Information and Broadcasting and Information Technology met at Parliament House separately Wednesday to elect their respective chairmen as contemplated by Rule 163 (1) of Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Senate, 1988.

Secretary Senate, Raja Muhammad Amin conducted the elections.

The name of Senator Liaquat Ali Bangulzai was proposed by Senator S. M Zafar and seconded by Senators Tahira Latif, Dr Javed Leghari, Syed Muhammad Hussain and Maulana Sami-ul-Haq whereas Senator Abdul Razik was elected, unopposed chairman of the committees.

His name was proposed by Senator Muhammad Azam Khan Swati and was endorsed by Acting Chairman Senate, Jan Muhammad Khan Jamali and senators Sardar Mehmood Khan, Engineer Rashid Ahmed, Rukhsana Zuberi and Dr Javed Leghari.

The newly elected chairmen of the committees thanked the members for reposing the confidence in them and hoped that they would extend all possible cooperation to them in discharge of their responsibilities.

They observed that it is the information and communication age as the world has become a global village.

Vowing to uphold freedom of information in the country, they said, the information age has not only thrown up new challenges but also brought forward immense opportunities to move ahead on road to development.
