Hyderabad : At least three passengers were killed and 40 injured as 11 coaches of a passenger train derailed near the coastal city of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, officials said Tuesday.
The coaches of Nagercoil-Howrah Gurudev Express derailed Monday around 11 pm between Duvvada and Gopalapatnam railway stations of East Coast Railways near Visakhapatnam, about 600 km from the state capital.
The injured have been admitted to King George Hospital in Visakhapatnam, where the condition of four people is stated to be critical.
A spokesman of the South Central Railway told IANS that three passengers were killed in the accident.
The accident occurred a few minutes after the Howrah-bound train from Nagercoil in Tamil Nadu left Duvvada railway station.
Police and rescue workers swung into action to pull out passengers from the derailed coaches. A special train carrying doctors and medical relief reached the accident site.
Since the accident took place at about 15 km from the city, the medical teams could be rushed in time thus minimizing the loss of lives.
