Mumbai : The Maharashtra government will link all 9,000 villages in the state with the State Data Centre through wireless connectivity.
Finance Minister Jayantrao Patil said this while inaugurating the International Conference on Communications Convergence – “Wireless Communication in Today’s Age”, at the Indian Merchants’ Chambers (IMC) here Thursday.
Though he did not specify a time frame for the proposed venture, Patil said the government has recently connected the treasuries at all talukas (tehsils, or sub-district administrative blocks) with the state headquarters in Mumbai.
“This has enabled the government to monitor and regulate the cash flows at a pre-determined rate,” he said.
Patil added that the state has implemented a pilot project for releasing payments online – directly to the bank accounts of recipients.
A similar online project is underway for tax collections and disbursal of dues through banks.
For this, the state will create a website for direct and realtime communications with people, including pensioners, and enable them to keep track of their applications in the different government departments.
Director Planning and New Service of BSNL Gopal Das said the company’s scheme for using wireless broadband technology to reach out to the villages was at an advanced stage of finalisation.
