Libya Blocks Presidential Statement on Middle East

By SPA

United Nations : The United Nations Security Council on Thursday failed to pass a presidential statement condemning the killing of eight Jewish students in Jerusalem after Libya insisted the text include mention of an ongoing Israeli military operation in the Gaza Strip.

Libya’s deputy UN representative, Ibrahim al-Dabbashi, said his country disagreed with the presidential statement because it failed to place the killing in context. The shooting attack in Jerusalem Thursday came after more than 130 Palestinian deaths in Gaza as the Israeli army continued an operation in the area.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon released a statement on Thursday condemning the “savage attack” and extending his condolences to relatives of the victims.

Meanwhile, the UN Human Rights Council on Thursday condemned the situation in Gaza and in southern Israel by 33 votes to one with 13 abstentions. The council, which has been much criticized by both the United States and Israel, called on Israel to end its military incursion into Gaza and for Hamas to end its firing of rockets into Israel, Ban’s spokeswoman Michele Montas told the press.
