Bangalore airport functions normally

Bangalore : Flight operations continued to be normal at Bangalore airport Thursday, the second day of strike by the Airports Authority of India employees.

The employees are protesting the scheduled closure of Bangalore and Hyderabad airports as new international airports have come up in the two cities.

“Everything is normal. All flights are landing and taking off as per schedule,” an AAI spokesperson said.

“Sanitation in the premises is also not affected as the job has been outsourced,” she said.

Bangalore is one of the two focal points of the dispute over which members of the AAI Employees’ Union have gone on a de facto countrywide strike from Tuesday midnight.

The new Bangalore International Airport is to commence commercial operations sometime in April. It was to start functioning from March 30 but the launch has been put off for various reasons.

The Hyderabad airport is to be inaugurated by Congress president Sonia Gandhi Friday and commercial operations will begin from March 16.

Of the 180 AAI employees at the city airport, 120 are staff and 60 are officers.

The country’s third busiest airport after Mumbai and Delhi, the Bangalore airport handles about 300 flight movements a day, with 20-25 flights in 60 minutes during peak hours.
