Greater Noida : US-based Indian Sunitha Rao cruised into the quarterfinals, while compatriot Sanaa Bhambri had to bite the dust in the second round of ITF Women’s Challenger tennis tournament at the Jaypee Greens Sports Complex here Wednesday.
Second seed Sunitha continued her fine run at the $25,000 event thrashing Serbian Teodora Mircic 6-2,6-2, while Sanaa lost to Vlada Ekshibarova of Uzbekistan 7-5, 6-4.
Apart from Sunitha’s victory it was a pale day for Indians as after losing her singles match earlier in the day, Sanaa, partnering Rushmi Chakravarthi lost her doubles match too. The Indian pair went down to Yayuk Basuki and Romana Tedjakusuma of Indonesia 6-4, 6-2 in the last eight.
Uberoi sisters – Neha and Shikha – also followed the suit losing to third seeded South African pair of Kelly Anderson and Chanelle Scheepers 6-2, 3-6, 10-4, while Isha Lakhani and her Japanese partner Ayaka Maekawa were shown the door by fourth seeded Serb-Slovak combination of Mircic and Lenka Tvaroskova of 6-3, 6-1.
