Campaigning for Ranchi municipal election ends

Ranchi, March 23 (IANS) Campaigning for the Jharkhand capital city’s municipal elections ended Sunday evening.

The electionas are slated for March 25. More than 1,200 candidates are in the fray for the posts of one mayor, one deputy mayor and 58 ward commissioners of the Ranchi Municipal Corporation. The mayor’s post is reserved for women.

For mayor’s post, 27 candidates are in fray and 78 candidates are contesting the deputy mayor’s post. The State Election Commission has deputed around 5,400 government employees for the conduct of the election process.

Heavy security arrangements have also been made. More than 3,000 security personnel will be deployed to ensure peace on the election day, said officials.

The election is not taking place on party line. Political parties have extended indirect support to candidates of their choice.

“After election, we will get at least 60 people who will be involved in the development of the city,” said Ranchi Deputy Commissioner Avinash Kumar.
