Muzaffarnagar (Uttar Pradesh) : Farmer leader Mahendra Singh Tikait was Wednesday arrested here, two days after a warrant was issued against him for his alleged caste-laced diatribe against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati.

The Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) president would be taken to a court in Bijnore, Inspector General (Meerut) V.K. Gupta said.

Tikait was accused of making derogatory casteist comments during a farmers’ rally in Bijnore district Sunday.

The Uttar Pradesh government had called in the Rapid Action Force, Provincial Armed Constabulary and policemen from 28 police stations Monday to arrest Tikait, but backed off as his supporters in his village Sisauli fought pitched battles with the security personnel throughout the day.

On Wednesday morning, Tikait had called a panchayat to discuss the issue as about 10,000 men in uniform stood guard around Sisauli village in Muzaffarnagar district.
