Coimbatore : Prakash Karat was Thursday re-elected general secretary of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) for another three years as the party congress concluded here.
Delegates attending the national convention also decided to “relieve” veteran Marxists Jyoti Basu and Harkishan Singh Surjeet from the politburo, the party’s highest decision making body.
Basu and Surjeet, who have been unwell for months, were among the nine members of the first party politburo when the CPI-M was founded in 1964. All the other seven have died.
Karat was elected general secretary for the first time three years ago at the last party congress in New Delhi.
