London : The British government has expressed its "deep concern" to Pakistan over reported comments by one of its ministers which suggested Salman Rushdie's knighthood could justify suicide attacks, a Foreign Office spokesman said Tuesday.
The statement came as Britain's high commissioner to Pakistan, Robert Brinkley, was summoned to the Foreign Ministry in Islamabad.
Pakistan's Minister for Religious Affairs, Ijaz-ul-Haq, warned Monday that the decision to award Rushdie a knighthood could provoke radical Muslims to carry out suicide attacks.
