One held for Maoist attack in Jharkhand

Ranchi : The Ranchi police have arrested a Maoist, Jeetan Marandi, suspected to have led an attack last year that killed 19 people, including son of former Jharkhand chief minister Babulal Marandi, police sources here said Sunday.

According to the sources, the state police arrested Jeetan from Sukhdeonagar in Ranchi late Saturday night. The police have not officially confirmed Jeetan’s arrest.

The Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) rebels, in October last year, attacked Chilkhari village in Giridih district and killed 19 people. Among them was Anup Marandi, son of former chief minister Marandi.

Maoists are active in 18 of the 24 districts in the state. In last seven years, more than 1,000 people, including 614 civilians and 290 security personnel, have been killed.
