The inaugural flight from Delhi was received here by General (retired) S.F. Rodrigues, Punjab governor and administrator of the union territory of Chandigarh.

Till now Indian and Jet Airways were the only airlines flying from Delhi to Chandigarh. With the new service, Kingfisher expects to cater to a large number of tourists since Chandigarh is known as the gateway to Himachal Pradesh, which has a number of hill resorts.

Kingfisher Airlines vice-president (sales) Shiva Ramachandran told reporters here that the company would soon begin operations to Jammu, Srinagar, Amritsar and other destinations in north India.

Airport officials said international operations from Chandigarh were expected to begin by the end of 2009.
