New Delhi : Having named its departments and buildings after luminaries like Nelson Mandela, Fidel Castro, Sarojini Naidu and Noam Chomsky, the Jamia Milia Islamia Friday evening inaugurated a department in the name of Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh.
Jamia authorities have named its Centre for Distance and Open Learning after the minister. The three-storey building will cater to the need of nearly 3,000 students pursuing study through distance learning. The university is offering 50 courses through its distance-learning programme.
Besides, a road, Shahrah-I-Arjun Singh, was also inaugurated Friday. M. Rais Khan, president of Jamia Teachers' Association, inaugurated the road leading to the Mujeeb Bagh Teachers' Housing Complex.
On the occasion, the minister inaugurated another three-storey building named after linguistics exponent Noam Chomsky. The complex houses the Centre for Jawaharlal Nehru Studies, the Munshi Premchand Archives and Literary Centre, and the International Boys' Hostel.
"It is indeed appropriate that this complex has been named after the leading linguist, writer and activist, Noam Chomsky, whose commitment to critical enquiry, we wish our centres of learning and research to imbibe and propagate," Singh said in his inaugural speech.
