French Minister Warns on Food Crisis

By Prensa Latina,

Paris : French Minister of Agriculture Michel Barnier Tuesday warned the seriousness of the increase in the world food prices, and called the European Union to adopt urgent measures to face this problem.

Barnier presented a French initiative in Luxemburg on Monday to regulate the current abrupt increases in food prices, and considered that the issue can unleash a world crisis.

In a statement to BFM radio station, Barnier emphasized that food should not be left at the mercy of the market law and international speculation, and so “governments have to be consistent.”

The crisis in Haiti, protests in Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Philippines, and Indonesia, gave the signs of alarm regarding the current food crisis in the world.

On Monday, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food Jean Ziegler said that the world is heading to a hard period of protests linked to food crisis.

In an interview with the French Liberation daily, Ziegler stressed that if 854 million people were suffering hunger before the increase in food prices, what is coming now is an announced disaster.
