Srinagar : The Srinagar-Leh National Highway was closed following heavy snowfall and landslides Wednesday, a day after the road was thrown open after remaining closed during the winter months.
The strategic highway, which connects the cold desert region of Ladakh with the Kashmir valley, was closed due to heavy snowfall in the Zojila pass on the road, officials said.
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO), which is responsible for maintenance of the road, had employed a record number of men and machinery this year to open the road ahead of schedule.
In earlier years, the road was opened to vehicular traffic by the end of May.
