New Delhi : President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam has accepted the resignation of Rajasthan Governor Pratibha Patil, the presidential candidate of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) and Left parties.
A.R. Kidwai, the governor of Haryana, has been asked to officiate in Patil's place, an official communiqué from Rashtrapati Bhavan said Friday.
Kalam's term expires July 24 and Patil is seen as a strong contender to succeed him in next month's election.
