Pakistan’s missing envoy to Afghanistan held by Taliban

Abu Dhabi : Pakistan’s ambassador to Afghanistan Tariq Azizuddin, who went missing in February, has said that he is being held by the Taliban, in a video aired on Al Arabia TV channel Saturday.

Azizuddin, his driver and a bodyguard went missing in February. In the video, Azizuddin asked the Pakistani government to meet the Taliban’s demands to secure their release.

“We were on our way to Afghanistan in our official car on Feb 11 when we were kidnapped in the region of Khyber … by the ‘Mujahedeen’ of the Taliban,” he said.

Azizuddin appeared in the video with two men sitting next to him and three gunmen standing in the background.

The Pakistani diplomat, who has health problems including high blood pressure and heart complications, said that all the three kidnapped men were living “in comfortable conditions and are being looked after”.

Azizuddin also urged the Pakistani government and its ambassadors to Iran and China “to do all they can to protect our lives and answer all the demands of the Taliban in order to secure our release”.
