Baghdad : U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice arrived in Baghdad on a surprise visit on Sunday, a U.S. embassy spokesman said.
“I can confirm that Secretary of State Rice is in Baghdad and has arrived in the Green Zone,” the spokesman said. Rice is expected to meet Iraqi leaders in Baghdad later in the day, he said.
Rice’s visit came as Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki launched a crackdown on Shiite militia loyal to radical cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.
The U.S. secretary of state is scheduled to attend a two-day meeting in Kuwait that will involve Iraq and its neighboring countries.
