Srinagar : Two top guerillas of the Hizbul Mujahideen militant outfit were gunned down by the security forces in north Kashmir Wednesday, according to the police.
The police said personnel of anti-insurgency Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the state police jointly surrounded Khawaja Bagh locality in Baramulla town, 56 km from here.
The forces were tipped off about the presence of militants, including district commander Tanveer Ahmed Zargar and to guerrilla Imtiyaz Khan, in a house, said a police officer here.
“As the security forces zeroed in on the targetted house, the militants opened fire at the troops,” the police officer said.
“In the fierce gunfight that lasted several hours, Zargar and Khan were killed,” he said.
Two civilians injured in the gunfight were taken to a hospital.
