Describing increasing Talibanisation in the country as a threat, a high-level presentation made to President Musharraf at the National Security Council is reported to have called for an immediate action before it is too late.

A source said the 15-page presentation at the NSC speaks of the Taliban having regrouped and reorganised, with serious repercussions for Pakistan.

“Time is of essence. We must act before it is too late,” is how it was summed up at the meeting early this month, the source said.

The NSC meeting on June 4, with President Musharraf in the chair, held exhaustive discussions on the increasing Talibanisation in the country, particularly in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) and the North West Frontier Province (NWFP).

The NSC was told that “Swift and decisive action is required to turn the tide of what in time can become a threat to the rest of Pakistan,” the Dawn daily quoted the unnamed source as saying.

The NSC was informed that there was inaction on the part of law-enforcement agencies (LEAs) with the “resultant vacuum (having) been filled by militants and non-state actors.” Musharraf has reportedly approved military crack down on madrassas promoting militancy, particularly in the country’s restive northern areas bordering Afghanistan.

It has been decided to re-deploy 46 platoons of the Frontier Constabulary from other provinces to the restive NWFP.
