The organisation, called “Deshiya Kaikavedi”, is headed by Padmini Thomas, an Arjuna awardee and a former athlete from Kerala.

The aim of the organisation is to identify new talent in sports, state Congress president Ramesh Chennithala said at the launch function Tuesday.

“The organisation will hold sports events in every village of the state to spot new talent. We have experts from this field who will assist the organization,” said Chennithala.

Besides leader of the opposition in the state assembly Oommen Chandy, others attending the function included sportspersons like Shiny Wilson, S. Najumudeen and Wilson Cherian.

Chandy criticised the “bad treatment” recently meted out to speedster S. Sreesanth who hails from Kerala. He presented Sreesanth’s parents with five gold sovereigns for his performance in the Twenty20 World Cup last year that India won.
