A German army officer, Boeselager said he obtained for the other plotters the explosive device that was detonated under a table at Hitler’s Wolf’s Lair headquarters in present-day Poland July 20, 1944.

The blast only injured Hitler. Count Stauffenberg, another of the aristocratic officers who loathed the Nazis, was executed.

A feature film about the plot, starring Tom Cruise as Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, who planted the bomb, is set for release next year.

Baron von Boeselager said he was never caught because none of the captured conspirators had revealed his name under torture.

His family, living at Altenahr near Frankfurt, said he died late Wednesday or early Thursday.

In numerous interviews he said his greatest regret was that an earlier plot to simply shoot Hitler dead in an army headquarters in March 1943 was called off.

Later, bombs were twice placed in Hitler’s plane but failed to explode, he said.
