"There was a strong recommendation from the members of the steering committee for getting Hindi recognized as one of the official languages of the United Nations," the external affairs ministry said Tuesday said after a meeting of the steering committee of the Hindi conference was held under the chairmanship of Minister of State for External Affairs Anand Sharma.

The three-day conference kicks off July 13 with a special session entitled "Hindi at the United Nations" from the UN headquarters in New York.

The conference will have nine thematic sessions at which scholars from India and abroad, including scholars from non-Hindi speaking regions, will present papers on subjects ranging from Hindi and IT to the role of Bollywood in the promotion of Hindi.

The external affairs ministry has invited the representatives of all the universities in the world where Hindi is taught as a subject to the conference. All the ambassadors of the 191 member countries of the UN, including the UN secretary general, have also been invited to this seminal event to promote Hindi as one of the world languages.
