Mumbai : Indian shares ended flat Tuesday although telecom and energy firms made gains, with a key index ending 0.09 percent up.
The benchmark 30-share Sensitive Index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) closed 0.09 percent or 13.36 points up to end at 14,501.08 levels with 15 of its components trading in the red.
Similarly, the broad-based 50-issue National Stock Exchange (NSE) index Nifty closed at 4,285.70 – a gain of 26.30 points or 0.62 percent.
State-run oil and natural gas explorer ONGC led the major Sensex gainers, up 2.11 percent at Rs.935.90, followed by top private sector mobile service provider Bharti Airtel, up 2.01 percent at Rs.850.00 and textile major Grasim Industries, up 1.44 percent at Rs.2,496.15.
Other major stocks that traded in the green were public sector heavy electrical equipment maker BHEL, multi-utility vehicle maker Tata Motors, consumer goods major Hindustan Unilever, private sector telecom service provider Reliance Communications, state-run lender State Bank of India, steel maker Tata Steel and automobile major Maruti Udyog.
Drug major Ranbaxy Laboratories was the biggest loser of the day, down 2.36 percent at Rs.347.65, followed by the country's second largest software exporter Wipro, down 1.25 percent at Rs.508.65 and housing finance company HDFC, down 1.02 percent at Rs.1,884.85.
Others who traded in the red were cement major Gujarat Ambuja Cements, India's third largest software exporter Infosys Technologies, engineering and construction major L&T, private sector lender ICICI Bank, two-wheeler and three-wheeler maker Bajaj Auto and software exporter TCS.
