Supreme Court closes for summer vacation

By IANS,

New Delhi : The Supreme Court Friday closed for seven weeks of summer vacation and will reopen July 7.

However, during the 50-day summer break, the apex court will continue working through one bench of two judges.

The vacation bench, which will have two judges on a rotation basis, will hear urgent and miscellaneous cases every Monday. Old regular cases would be heard between Tuesday and Friday.

The apex court judges nominated by Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan to man the vacation benches by rotation include Justice Arijit Pasayat, Justice C.K. Thakker, Justice Lokeshwar Singh Panta, Justice P.P. Naolekar, Justice R.V. Ravendran, Justice P. Sathasivam and Justice Almas Kabir.

Following criticism over the practice of going for a long summer break, the apex court had in 2006 decided to cut its holiday-period by one week and constitute a vacation bench.
