New Delhi: A public interest litigation (PIL) was filed in Delhi High Court regarding injustices against Urdu language and Urdu medium schools.
The PIL has been filed by president of Farogh-e-Urdu Society, Dr. Zainul Abedeen and the treasurer of Gupta Educational Promotion Society Sha’oor Ahmad. Government of India’s step-motherly treatment of Urdu since Independence is not hidden from any learned and intelligent person.
After going through their petition, the High Court bench comprising Justice Ajit Shah and Dr. Murli Dharan ordered Delhi’s secretary of education, director of education department and senior officials of department of education of Delhi Nagar Nigam to clarify the situation in the court on 21st May 2008.
The issues raised in the PIL included knowledge of principals and teachers of Urdu schools about Urdu language, limitation of only 22 Urdu medium schools among total 1200 schools in Delhi, absence of appointments in these Urdu medium schools since 1995 and non-availability of Urdu textbooks.
