Verheugen considered it wrong to produce biofuels from crops used to feed humans and animals, and said to be happy that the initial biofuel euphoria is over.

In an interview to be released by German Bild daily on Sunday, the EU commissioner said the European Commission considers sustainability fundamental and called on governments to step up research about alternative fields.

A communique issued by the International Food Policy Research Institute on Friday urged the European Union and the United States to to halt biofuel subsidies, which distort world food markets.
