Dhaka : An estimated 1.4 million children in Bangladesh are engaged with risky work in mills and factories, according to a national seminar held here Sunday.
They said there are about 8.5 million child labors in Bangladesh and about 1.4 million of them are involved in risky work in various mills and factories.
Ministry of Labor and Employment of the Bangladeshi Caretaker government organized the seminar with the theme of ‘Eradication of Child Labor from Risky work in Bangladesh: Prevailing Situation and Future Perspective.’
Speaking at the seminar, caretaker government Labor and Employment Adviser Anwarul Iqbal said, “Child labor from our garment sector has been eradicated with the help of all concerned people and organizations including the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, International Labor Organization and United Nations Children’s Fund.”
The government is now strongly committed to eradicating child labor in the country, he said.
Iqbal said the draft of national policy on eradication of child labor has already been finalized and very soon it would be placed before the advisory council for approval.
