India: railways freight revenue goes up by 21.91 per cent

New Delhi : Sustaining the growth in the recent past, railways have generated Rs 4393.19 crore from freight traffic in April this year as compared to Rs 3603.72 crore during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 21.91 per cent. (One Crore: ten million)

Railways carried 67.69 million tonnes of freight traffic during April as compared to 61.05 million tonnes during the corresponding period last year, recording an increase of 10.88 per cent.

Rs 1560.46 crore were earned from transportation of 28.82 million tonnes of coal followed by Rs 965.54 crore coming from exports of 12.60 million tonnes of iron ore, steel plants and other domestic users.

Railways earned Rs 373.33 crore by transporting 7.04 million tonnes of cement, Rs 295.08 crore from 3.12 million tonnes of foodgrains, Rs 260.06 crore from 3.17 million tonnes of petroleum oil and lubricant and Rs 210.40 crore from 2.05 million tonnes of pig iron and finished steel.

It earned Rs 132.36 crore from 2.07 million tonnes of fertilisers, Rs 48.52 crore from 0.74 million tonnes of raw materials for steel plants except iron ore and Rs 370.26 crore from 5.66 million tonnes of other goods.
