Hamburg : Jens Lehmann briefly toyed with retirement over a 2005 incident but eventually stayed on and was later chosen Germany goalkeeper in the 2006 World Cup and beyond.
Lehamnn told Saturday's edition of the Bild daily that he was upset when the fans constantly jeered him during the official opening of Munich's new stadium in June 2005.
Lehmann was the rival of Munich goalkeeper Oliver Kahn and was later named first choice for the World Cup by then coach Juergen Klinsmann.
"You come into a German stadium in the national team colours and then you are jeered by the public. I was quite down after the incident. I considered quitting the national team the night after the stadium opening," the 37-year-old Lehmann told Bild.
"I am glad that my wife Conny consoled me that night and gave me confidence. The next day the retirement thoughts were gone."
Lehmann was a key player in Germany's strong run to third place at the home World Cup, saving two penalties in a quarter-final shoot-out against Argentina.
