The former Ajax manager, who had gone on to serve as Frank Rijkaard’s assistant at Barcelona, joined Chelsea last season to work with Grant after he had replaced Jose Mourinho as coach.

Grant left the club last weekend after finishing runners-up to Manchester United in the Champions League and the Premier League, and losing the Carling Cup final to Tottenham.

A statement on the club website said: “Chelsea Football Club can confirm that it terminated Henk Ten Cate’s contract today (Thursday). This follows a meeting this morning. As a result of the team management changes at Chelsea FC, and in the light of any forthcoming appointment, it was clear this was the correct decision for all parties. Everybody at Chelsea would like to thank Henk for his contribution since coming to the club last year.”

The decision would seem to decrease the likelihood of Rijkaard being appointed as Grant’s successor.
