Islamabad : Two children were killed when debris from a railway bridge blown up by suspected insurgents fell on their house in Pakistan’s south-western Balochistan province Thursday, the police said.
The homemade bombs planted on the structure’s support partially damaged the metal bridge on the fringes of provincial capital Quetta, suspending rail traffic on the track, according to police officer Nadeem Iqbal.
“Two children sleeping in the courtyard of their house by the bridge were fatally injured by flying debris and died shortly afterwards,” Iqbal said.
No one else was reported injured in other adjacent houses.
Movement of trains on the route was restored by midday after the railway authorities repaired the bridge.
Though no insurgent group active in the area claimed the responsibility of the attack, local rebels fighting for greater political and economic autonomy for the impoverished province are believed to be behind the incident.
Baloch insurgents regularly target pylons, gas pipelines and railway links as well as government security forces to press for their demands.
The violence saw an upsurge after a veteran rebel leader and prominent politician was killed in a military operation in August 2006.
