Punjab beat Karnataka to enter Santosh Trophy finals

Srinagar : In a cliff-hanger semi-final, Punjab defeated Karnataka 4-3 via the tie-breaker to enter the finals of the Santosh Trophy football tournament here Friday.

Punjab will clash with Services in the finals Sunday.

Karnataka has only before figured in the finals, losing on penalties to West Bengal.

The two teams made repeated substitutions in the hard fought match but even this not produce a result in the regulation 90 minutes and 30 minutes of extra time, forcing the tie breaker.

During the stipulated time, Punjab custodian and skipper Karanjit Singh made five brilliant saves as the Karnataka strikers repeatedly tested him.

Karnataka’s Nabeel missed a golden chance in the 20th minute of the game.

In the dying moments of the stipulated time, Karnataka goalkeeper Gumpe Rime made an acrobatic save on a fine shot from Sakarta Singh. Punjab substitute Balraj Singh once got a good pass from the right wing but there was nobody to nick the ball into the open net on his fine cross.
