Pakistan-India committee for early release of prisoners

By IANS,

Islamabad : The Pakistan-India Judicial Committee has recommended that prisoners who have completed their terms and whose nationality has been confirmed by their respective High Commissions be immediately released.

The four members of the Indian chapter of the eight-member committee said Saturday the verification process for those prisoners for whom it had not been completed should be done in a month and, in any case, before the committee’s next meeting in India.

According to a joint statement issued by the Foreign Office following the visit of the committee to jails in Lahore, Karachi and Rawalpindi, its members noted that the lists of prisoners exchanged by the two governments on March 31 were incomplete.

The committee, therefore, expected that the procedure for preparing and updating the lists would be streamlined and the next lists to be exchanged on July 1 would be error- free, The News reported Sunday.

The lists should contain information about the date of arrest, details of sentence, charges under which the prisoner was sentenced and the expected date of release, the committee added.

The members of the committee, all of them retired high court judges, are Abdul Qadeer Chaudhary, Fazal Karim, Nasir Aslam Zahid and Mian Muhammad Ajmal from Pakistan, and Nagendra Raj, Amarjeet Choudhary, A.S. Gill and M.A. Khan from India.

The committee visited Pakistani jails June 9-13 to meet Indian prisoners lodged there and also held discussion with jail officials.
