Ludhiana : Nearly 25 kg of explosives and 25 detonators were seized from two youths near Punjab’s Jagraon town, a police official said Tuesday.
Gurbej Singh, 25, and Manjit Singh, 30, have been arrested, Inspector General of Police Jalandhar range Sanjiv Kalra told reporters here.
The explosives include nearly 200 gelatin sticks with markings that show they were manufactured in Maharashtra’s Nagpur district. The detonators were procured by the youth from Andhra Pradesh’s Nalgonda district.
Following a tip-off, the youth were nabbed at a bridge near Jagraon by a police team while they were shifting the explosives in a suitcase from one location to another. They were going on a motorcycle when they were nabbed, about 50 km from here.
Kalra said that investigations were in progress as both the youth had links with terrorist sympathizers, including Gurmeet Singh, hailing from a village in Hoshiarpur district, who is now living in Germany’s Hamburg city.
“This is one of the biggest seizures in recent times in Punjab,” Kalra said.
“The network of the terrorists is quite widespread. The funds are coming from Germany while the explosives and other material are coming from Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh. The arrested youth are part of a bigger module,” Kalra said.
He said that preliminary interrogation of both the youths revealed that the target of the terrorists in Punjab were godmen and some vital installations.
The police officials said they were trying to probe the bigger network which is trying to revive terrorism in Punjab.
