Nahr Al-Bared conference in Vienna sets basis for development — Plasnik

Vienna : Austrian Foreign Minister Ursula Plasnik stressed on Tuesday that the international donors’ conference on reconstruction of northern Lebanon’s Nahr Al-Bared refugee camp had set basis for international efforts for achieving development in the Middle East.

The Austrian Radio and Television Corporation quoted the Austrian Foreign Minister as saying that the Vienna conference “gave hope for the Palestinian refugees for having a better future.” “Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Al-Siniora invited me to hold the donors’ conference, and I did not hesitate to respond to the Lebanese call for help,” Plasnik asserted.

Plasnik added, more than 70 countries and international organizations participated in the conference, where they expressed their actual cooperation with the Palestinians and the Lebanese people, affirming their complete commitment for supporting the Palestinian cause.

Meanwhile, Plasnik also referred to the European Union EU’s support of the Palestinian people, via holding a conference in Berlin to support the Palestinian right to an independent state.

She also stressed on the importance of supporting other countries in the Middle East, praising the political and financial support presented by the international community.

The international donors’ conference on reconstruction of northern Lebanon Nahr Al-Bared that concluded last night approved USD 120 million for the process, with the pledge of presenting other aid as next fall.

The conference was attended by Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad al-Siniora, Palestinian Premier Salam Fayyad, Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa, European Commissioner for External Relations Benita Ferrero-Waldner and representatives from over 70 countries and international organizations.
